945 Jenifer St. The home was built around 1858 by William H. Karn. Born in 1812, Karn was a carpenter contractor and worked on such buildings as the Bashford Home at 423 N. Pinckney, the Washburn Observatory and the spire of Grace Episcopal Church. The house originally had its kitchen and dining room in the raised basement. 924 Spaight St. the George W. and Catherine Hyer house, built in 1856. Hyer was associated with several Madison newspapers including he Wisconsin Enquirer, the first newpaper to be published in Madison. Hyer's brother, David was the proprietor of the Hyer House Hotel, at 854 Jenifer. A house that exhibits its Greek Revival styling in its gable returns, low-pitched roof and simplicity. 938 Spaight St. The Henry and Elizabeth Fauerbach house, built in 1902 and designed by Lew Porter, is one of the few residences yet standing by Porter. Porter was a principal in the firm of Conover and Porter, from 1885 to January, 1899. The firm had previously designed the Fauerbach Brewery buildings. The Fauerbach house is emminently restorable and would have the grandeur of the McCarthy house by Conover and Porter nearby at 848 Jenifer. Courtesy of N. Schroeder

946 Spaight St. Shipley-Shuttleworth House - 1855
First occupied by railroad contractor D.B. Shipley, this brick house draws stylistically from both the Greek Revival and the Italianate. In the 1880's the dwelling was owned and occupied by the family of the Territorial Secrectary William B. Slaughter. In 1893 attorney Farrand K. Shuttleworth purchased the house. A one-time partner of political boss Elisha W. Keyes, Shuttleworth resided here until his death in 1929.
