941 Spaight St. - One building of the Norwegian Luthern Seminary, probably taken from atop the adjacent school building looking southwest toward Lake Monona. The octagonal mansion was built by Gov. Leonard Farwell in 1857. The building also served as a Civil War Soldier's Harvey Hospital and later a Civil War Soldier's Orphan's Home, before it's use as the Seminary by 1871.

941 Spaight St. - The Norwegian Luthern Seminary, as seen from near the corner of Spaight and Brearly, looking south. Originally, the octagon mansion on the right was built as Leonard Farwell's mansion in 1857. Farwell lost his fortune and the building stood vacant until it was used as a Civil War Soldier's Home, the Harvey Hospital, and later the Solder's Orphan's Home. In 1872, it then served as a Norwegian Lutheran Seminary. The building at the south corner of Spaight and Brearly was built, designed by Madison architect Stephen Vaugh Shipman. The buildings were demolished in the 1890s and the block subdivided.

View from the Norwegian Lutheran Seminary. Looking towards Bascom Hill. 500 block of Paterson in immediate foreground, along with the 800 block of Jenifer Street. The Ott house is the large brick house at the left edge. The clock tower of City Hall and Old Main are prominent on the skyline. The Norwegian Lutheran Seminary occupied the stone octagon mansion built by Leonard Farwell in 1857. It was on the south side of Spaight between Paterson and Brearly. It became the seminary in the early 1870s after serving as the Harvey Hospital for civil war veterans, followed by its use as an orphanage.

901 Spaight St. The Albert M. & Lena Stondal Residence, designed by Claude and Starck, and built in 1902. The house was modifed with the additional shed dormers and side addition. The Prairie School styled leaded glass windows in the dining room facing the street are exceptionally fine. The lakeside of the boathouse has a triangular window, similar to others used by Claude & Starck -- a detail more characteristic of the emerging Prairie School Style.

909 Spaight St. M.H. Sater Apartment Building, built 1907 (WAHI #112917). An exceptionally fine example of the Craftsman style in downtown Madison, the house also displays some characteristics of the Prairie School style. Though a citation on the architect hasn't yet been found, it suggests the likes of Alvin Small, Claude and Starck, their associates and peers.
