805 Williamsonc. 1976. The John and Dorota Schlundt home and wagon shop, probably built in 1872. Schlundt had a business arrangement with Wilhelm Heitkamp for a few years. The small frame rear wing was a separate apartment, and may pre-date this vermillion colored brick building. It may have been the first home for William Heitkamp in 1862 when he bought the lot. Heitkamp built the brick and stone building next door at 811 Williamson in 1872. See further information in the Heitkamp family history on this site.

854 Jenifer St., Hyer-Jaquish Hotel. Built 1854, burned and rebuilt in 1874. The Red Oak was planted by Gary Tipler and owner Jerry Fladen in 1974. Jerry Fladen was the theatre manager for the Orpheum, Hilldale, Big Sky and for a time the Majestic Theatres. He was an ardent preservationist and campaigned for the Third Lake Ridge Historic District. Along with Gary Tipler, Jerry sponsored a neighborhood historic research committee in the mid-1970s that prepared nominations for several buildings then listed as Madison Landmarks. Jerry also risked his job and made a plea for the preservation of the Orpheum Theatre, when the Milwaukee owner was considering selling it to a group who wished to gut it to expose the "natural brick walls" as a health club in the early 1980s. 854 Jenifer St.- "Hyer - Jaquish Hotel - 1854 - Built in a vernacular that borrows both from greek revival and italianate sources, this brick structure was the front part of a larger farmers' and railway hotel. Such hotels offered lodging to boarders and travelers in the nineteenth century. David Hyer came ot the nascent village of Madison in 1837. In 1855 he sold the hotel to Henry C. Jaquish, who operated it until a fire destroyed to rear portion of the building in 1874." Courtesy of N. Schroeder

Biederstaedt - Breitenbach Grocery - 1874 - A store with a residence above was a common pattern in nineteenth century Madison. This brick structure was erected as a saloon and grocery for Charles Biederstaedt. Built in a High Victorian Italianate mode, it replaced an earlier structure. In 1891 George C. Breitenbach took over the store. Courtesy of N. Schroeder

811 Williamson St Williams Heitkamp Blacksmith Shop and residence built 1872 (WAHI # 75107). Now (2004) Wisconsin Center for the Paper Arts. Heitkamp came from a small farming community Oberbauerschaft, located a southeast of Heddinghausan (Holzhausen bei Luebbecke). The Heitkamp family can be traced back to the birth of Wulbrandt Heitkamp in 1618. William Heitkamp was born at #32 Heddinghausen, Luebbecke Kreis (i.e., County) Westphalia, Prussia on 17 June 1826. William Heitkamp married Marie Luise Uphoff on 28 July 1850 and relocated to Hille, near Luebbecke, where he practiced his trade as a 'naglschmid' or 'nailsmith'. The family emigrated from their homeland in 1855 and came directly to Dane County where they first settled in the Cottage Grove area. Marie Luise's brother, Christian Heinrich Uphoff, as well as several other families from Hille, had already settled in the late 1840s early 1850s. Heitkamps first wife died and in 1858, he married Ann Katherine Lilienthal of Fondulac. William began buying lots in Madison in 1862, beginning with the purchase of E ½ of Lot #18 in Block #174 for $500. William must have sold this lot to John Schlundt, who became his business partner as well as neighbor in 1874. In 1863 he purchased from W. F. Vilas and Frances Massing another parcel (likely the purchase of Lots 3 & 4 in Block 148) in Madison for $250. William purchased Lot #2 in Block #148 in 1865 from George and Emeline Delaplaine and Elisha and Maria Burdick for $450. Refer to the Heitkamp family history Courtesy of N. Schroeder
